What is this?

Smārde's Green Swamp is located in the territory of Ķemeri National Park. Here, where peat extraction was stopped in the mid-20th century, calm water bodies have formed with good access for SUP boards. At sunset, the water surface becomes especially calm, and the surrounding landscape offers a clear view of the surrounding swamp forests and vegetation. The starting point is reachable with a short walk through the forest, and the route itself is suitable for both experienced riders and beginners.

No one to go with? Often you want to head out for some active fun, but there's no one to join you—friends have other plans, family is busy, and your partner isn't really into it. So feel free to join solo. In our Adventures, you won't feel alone because everyone's on the same path, giving you the chance to have a great time not only in nature but also meeting new people.

4 reasons to join:

  1. Sunset without a filter
  2. Impressive cormorant bird colony
  3. Picnic on the water
  4. Unusual and unique Adventure

What is the approximate plan?

  • You arrive at the Adventure with your own car, with a group buddy, or in our Adventure transport (info below in the FAQ section). Once your car is parked without bothering anyone on the roadside (Google map / Waze), you can head out on a ~250m or about a 5min walk to the SUP meeting spot at pie Zaļā purva ezeriņa (Google map) where pumped-up SUP boards and your group leader await you. We meet here about an hour before sunset, and since the sun sets at a different time each day, you'll see the exact time for your chosen date below. Before we head into the bog, the group leader gives a short but valuable briefing on SUPing and water safety. The day's fatigue has passed, and we're off on a sunset Adventure. If you think, "I can't SUP, I've never done it, and I won't succeed," you should definitely come and try – we guarantee you'll make it. You can confidently sign up and join the Adventure, even if you haven't stepped on a SUP board before. The bog lake is the perfect place to start your SUP fun because the water is calm and smooth as a mirror. And pleasant if you decide to take a swim... but seriously, by following everything the leader says and following the guidelines, falling in unexpectedly is impossible.

Once the SUP is harnessed, and your paddling skills feel Olympic medal-worthy, the sun starts to set, and here it is, "Sunset in the Bog". We'll snap beautiful photos, so Instagram floods with comments like "WOW, so beautiful", "I want to go too, take me next time," and then we'll have snacks right there in the bog because after a day of mischief and all the SUP activities, you'll want a bite, so it's the perfect time for a refreshing drink and a snack to replenish your energy reserves for the way back!

Shortly after sunset, or the exact time for your chosen date below, the Adventure is over, and it's time to move on to the day's Adventures, so account for the time spent on this Adventure + the time you'll spend getting back from it.

SUP or meeting place: pie Zaļā purva ezeriņa (Google map)
How much will we paddle? There's no specific route here, as the opportunity to paddle is around the area as a whole, not a specific route, but it'll be about ~3km
What to bring? Mugurā jāvelk laikapstākļiem atbilstošs apģērbs. Labāk uzvilkt kādu lieku jaku un pēc tam to novilkt, nekā salt. It īpaši šķērsojot atklātākas vietas var uznākt kāda vēja brāzma. Apģērbam jābūt ērtam, jo notiek diezgan aktīva kustēšanās jeb airēšana. Citreiz arī kājas mēdz būt slapjas. It īpaši uzkāpjot un nokāpjot no SUP dēļa, tāpēc jāpadomā ko vilkt kājās atbilstoši laikapstākļiem. Papildus ieteicams ir arī rezerves apģērbs, ko pārvilkt, ja gadījumā sanāk samērcēties.

How does this SUP Adventure go down?

We meet at the pre-arranged place and time. You arrive on time, dressed or ready for SUP'ing with activity-appropriate clothing, and at the spot, the group leader is already waiting for you with fully equipped SUP gear. You don't have to carry or pump anything yourself - everything is ready for your SUP activity, and with each other's support, we hop on the SUP boards to start our mini Adventure. There's no specific route, and the SUP area is limited, so you don't have to stick with the group leader or other participants, but you can enjoy the surroundings on your own (if you wish). At the pre-agreed time, we head to the shore, and the SUP Adventure is over. The group leader will take care of the SUP gear and pack it up, as well as transport it. No carrying SUPs for miles and no packing - you came, enjoyed the Adventure, and move on with your daily routine ;)

What else should I know?

If you're inclined to whine and be grumpy about little things, then this won't be the right Adventure, as it spoils both the group's microclimate and the mood of other group members. That's why we want to see positive adventurers on our Adventures. The group leader won't "babysit" the picky folks but will simply ignore them to focus on those who want to enjoy the Adventure. The group is small, which usually turns into a very friendly company, so it's not the right place for those who want to "pick fights."

We also recommend checking out the frequently asked questions.

Frequently asked questions:

  • 1. What do I need to bring?

CLOTHING - You'll definitely need weather-appropriate and event-appropriate clothing. Dressing for the weather means checking the forecast the day before the event and preparing your outfit accordingly. If it's raining, wear something rainproof, and if the sun's shining, dress so you're not too hot or cold, etc. Make sure you're comfortable. Also, remember a change of clothes, as this Adventure is on the water and you might get wet. In short, your clothing list might look like this: clothes for water activities, like a swimsuit in warm weather, long pants (ideally waterproof overpants) in cold weather, a sweater/jacket, suitable footwear, and a towel will be handy. Then clothes for when the wind picks up and spare clothes for after the event (in case of an unexpected swim). And it's important to be prepared for rain with a rain jacket, because you never know.
ADDITIONAL ITEMS - insect repellent (if it's "mosquito season"), sunscreen (if sunny weather is expected), a thermos with a drink (if not included in the Adventure), snacks (if not included in the Adventure), etc.

  • 2. Can beginners join the activity?

The SUP Adventure is meant for everyone - both those who paddle with a SUP board from morning till night, and those who've never done it before. We'll show, explain, and teach everything.

  • 3. Will the Adventure take place in unsuitable weather conditions?

We care about the quality and safety of this Adventure, so it will only happen in weather conditions suitable for this Adventure. Whether the weather is suitable is determined by the Adventure group leader, not any of the participants or their friends. In case of cancellation, we will inform you no later than 12 hours in advance (before the start of the Adventure). If canceled, you can reschedule your participation to another preferred date for this Adventure or even an Adventure with equivalent costs, but only if we cancel the event, not if a participant decides to cancel it themselves.

  • 4. How do we get to the Adventure and back?

Getting to the Adventure start is with your own private transport. If you don't have your own private transport, it's possible to team up and go with other participants of this event. Before the Adventure, we'll try to organize and help so those who drive with their own transport can pick up those who don't, as this way it's possible to share fuel costs (win-win). If this option doesn't suit you, it's possible to go by public transport.

  • 5. What should I do if I want to ride with your Adventure transport?

It's possible to go on the Adventure (and back) with our Adventure transport for a small, but reasonable fee of 10eur/person. Departure and meeting point is Riga center, but we can also pick you up on the way (if it's really on the way). Sign up for our transport by noting in the application form comments that you'll need a ride in our van. The number of spots in our transport is VERY limited.

  • 6. Can I go alone?

You can definitely join by yourself. On the contrary, many people go solo and in that case, you'll have the chance to meet new friends or maybe even find your other half 😉

  • 7. Can I join with my own SUP board?

You can definitely join us with your own SUP board, in that case, the Adventure price will be 15EUR, but drop us a private message so we can sort out the details.

  • 8. How to sign up for an Adventure?

You can sign up for the trip on our website by clicking the "SIGN UP" button and filling out the application form located under the Adventure description. Since there are many interested, but not all are actual travelers, an advance payment is required to confirm participation in the Adventure. The amount of the advance payment depends on the specific Adventure. By paying this advance, your spot in the Adventure is confirmed. If you cancel your participation in the Adventure, the advance payment is non-refundable and cannot be transferred to confirm participation in another trip.

  • 9. Signed up, what's next?

After signing up, mark and reserve these dates for yourself, and slowly start preparing. The day before the Adventure start date, but no later than 6:00 PM, you'll receive an informational email with the exact meeting place, time, and other important "what / where / when" info regarding this Adventure.

  • 10. How long can I think about it if I want to sign up?

You can think about it as long as there are spots available. After that, you can keep thinking, but there won't be any spots left on the trip.

  • 11. Is there anything else important?

The trip's vibe and awesomeness largely depend on the travelers themselves, so if you like to stir up trouble or "mess with the minds" of the organizers and other trip participants, then this trip isn't for you. We've had a couple of grumpy ladies before who annoyed everyone, so if you can't control your mood – DON'T COME! The group leader is ALWAYS right (even if they're not), so if you've decided to join, you'll have to listen to them.

Payment terms:

• Deposit payment 25EUR (per person) to reserve your spot upon booking.

Since we receive A LOT of applications but not all turn into actual bookings, your spot is only confirmed and reserved after the deposit is paid.

Age restrictions:

• Minimum recommended Participant age 12 years.

• No maximum age limit for participants.

How much does it cost?

Included in the adventure price:

  • SUP gear set (SUP board, paddle, life vest, leash)

  • Adventure stories and jokes from the group leader
